One of the great blessings which Allah Almighty has bestowed upon man is utterance and talking. “ The Beneficent.  Has made known the Quran. He has created man. He has taught him utterance.” ( surah Rahman). Islam has enlightened us how to benefit from this grace and how to make our talking a means for all what is good and for attaining Allah’s pleasure.

“There is no good in much of their secret talking sVd him who enjoins alms giving and the good and kindness and peace making among the people. Who does that, seeking the good pleasure of Allah, We shall bestow on him a vast reward” (surah Nisaa)

Our Prophet P.B.U.H also indicates that it is of the good belief to leave aside and be away of anything which of no importance or significance to you, and that your belief will not be strong, straight and pure except when your heart will be the same, and your heart will not be so, except when your tongue will be the same; and that long silence drives the devil away and helps in keeping and carrying out your duties.

Avoiding the nonsense talking and the vain conversation is a good character and is one of the requirements and pillars of success. Allah Almighty has mentioned it between two of the great pillars of Islam, namely, prayer and Zakat.

“Successful indeed are the believers. Who are humble in their prayer, and who shun the nonsense talking and the vain conversation, and who pay zakat.” ( surah muminoon)

In fact, man has been created to carry out and fulfil certain duties, and the muslim should not waste his time by indulging in such nonsense talking; and as he avoids it, Allah raises his rank.

Our Prophet P.B.U.H indicated that: “man may utter a word, for no reason but to let people laugh, and he falls because of that word more than the distance between the heaven and the earth. And man slips by his tongue more than he might slip by his feet.”

The muslim should always say what is good and kind, since this keeps affection and friendship amongst people.

“Tell my bond men to speak that which is kindlier. Lo! The devil sows discord among them. Lo! The devil is for man an open foe.”

When a man asked the Prophet P.B.U.H: ‘teach me a deed that helps me to enter Paradise?’ Our Prophet P.B.U.H said: “ give the food, spread the Salam (peace), and pray at night while the people are sleeping, you will enter Paradise with Salam (peace).”

Also, we are ordered to argue with the people of other religion in a good and quiet way.

“And do not argue with the people of the scripture unless it be in a way that is better, save with such of them as do wrong.” (Surah Ankaboot)

Islam directs us to ignore the foolish ones and the ignorant, and to avoid talking with them, and this is considered one of the first qualities of the faithful believers.

“The faithful slaves of the Beneficent are they who walk upon the earth modestly, and when the foolish ones address them, they say: Salam.” (Surah Furqaan)

One of the precautions which islam has taken for protecting conversations from being nonsense is that it prohibited vain argument and debate, whether it is on a right or a wrong basis.

Our Prophet P.B.U.H said: “ no people will go astray after being rightly guided except when they indulge in argument and vain discussions.” In fact, all the affairs of life deteriorate through this vain argument, and this may be one of the reasons of the existence of many sectarian divisions and parties in our muslim nation. Once the Prophet P.B.U.H saw his companions arguing with each other in the affairs of the religion. He was very angry and forbade them and said that those before us perished through this kind of argument. And the first thing that Allah Almighty forbade our Prophet P.B.U.H from after worshipping idols was argument.
